Blanket Immunity Jo Channing Book 1 by Adam Van Susteren

Synopsis

Joanna P. Channing, a criminal defense lawyer, has just opened a private law firm after her failed attempt at running for judge.  After ten years as a prosecutor in the DA’s office, she’s got the experience. Now she needs the clients.

Her first client has been accused of rape.  Her second client was arrested for possession of marijuana.  Her third client has mysterious ties to the local crime community.

Since Jo is not in a position to turn down work, she accepts each of these cases and struggles to maintain both her moral and professional integrity.  As each case unfolds, she is forced to make challenging decisions and is pushed to her limits.

Review

Blanket Immunity, by Adam Van Susteren, is the first in Van Susteren’s Jo Channing legal thriller series and is a fictional novel best suited for readers who enjoy exciting and fast-paced legal thrillers.  This is absolutely not a book filled with dry legalese; this book is an exciting crime/thriller novel, told through the eyes of a criminal defense lawyer.

One of the aspects I liked most about the book is Van Susteren’s portrayal of Jo’s character.  I was immediately captured by Jo and her battle between avoiding monetary struggle and keeping herself on the right side of the law.  Van Susteren seamlessly created a three-dimensional character by showing different, somewhat contradictory, sides of Jo.  She starts as the nervous but outwardly-confident lawyer.  She’s knowledgable and direct when conferring with her clients, but is also quirky and funny when she’s alone.  Van Susteren humanized her character at the start, which foreshadowed her eventual internal struggle with morality later on in the book.

There was only one thing I disliked about this book.  Jo’s emotional relationship with both her parents and Dzuy, her romantic love interest, seemed forced and overly-emotional.   There were two or three monologues where Jo almost gushes about her feelings, which I felt did not completely fit with her character.  As these were few and far between, they did not detract from my enjoyment of the novel.
