This was a light-hearted and fun read, incorporating a playful and carefree narration style that I enjoyed. The British humor was a huge plus for me. I wish I wasn’t disappointed by the ending and writing style
Synopsis
How to describe Randy Love? He’s young, handsome, and has a deceptively charming disposition. Women seem to fall at his feet, even when he doesn’t want them to.
He fancies himself a natural-born salesman, able to convince anyone of anything. He has a near-photographic memory, the singular reason he made it through academia. He also thinks he’s God’s greatest gift to mankind. Randy the Irresistible is the story of how this naive boy entered the real world and was forced to grow up.
The book begins when Randy drops out of college to become a financial advisor. He quickly aces the credential test and moves to London, where he goes through a series of horrible living situations. With each new housing arrangement, it becomes more and more apparent that the nonsensical decisions he makes in life are the cause of most of his distress. At first, he questions why the world is against him, thinking he can do no wrong; however, with each new dilemma, he begins to question whether or not he is the cause of his own problems.
Review
Randy the Irresistible, by S M Goodier, is a British comedy fiction novel about Randy Love, a young man full of charisma but seriously lacking in common sense. Reading this book felt like sitting down to watch a favorite sitcom: it was lighthearted, made me laugh, and put me in a better mood than when I started reading. That being said, when I stopped reading, the book didn’t stay with me and was easily forgettable.
My favorite thing about this book was the dry British humor that played a central role. The narrator took every opportunity to highlight Randy’s illogical and immature behavior, poking fun at situations gone wrong. In turn, teasing Randy became almost like an inside joke between the reader and the narrator, which made Randy a fun protagonist to follow along with. Despite Randy’s questionable behavior, especially towards women, he managed to remain a character we wanted to root for.
I was disappointed by the ending; I felt it lacked a sufficient climax and that nothing happened to signify the end of the book. I did not feel that Randy changed as much as he should have if the point of the book was to follow him as he entered the real world and was forced to grow up. Additionally, while I appreciated the author’s writing style – using long sentences broken up by commas – the book contained many run-on sentences that were distracting at times.
Summary
I am giving this book 3 out of 5 stars. It was a light-hearted and fun read, incorporating a playful and carefree narration style that I enjoyed. I do not feel that a higher rating is appropriate, as the ending was disappointing and the writing contained many run-on sentences.
Readers should be aware that there is both explicit language and sexual content which may be inappropriate for younger readers.
