Synopsis

Twenty years ago in the dead of night, four seemingly random individuals pulled the ultimate heist and almost walked away with half a million dollars. But by daybreak, their plan had been shot to hell. One of them was in the hospital. One was in jail. One was dead. And one got away with it.

Arden Maxwell is haunted by the ghost of her father. He disappeared twenty years ago and left her and her sister, Lisa, with nothing but overdue bills and rumors that he was the man behind the heist. Twenty years later, Arden comes back to her old family home near Caddo Lake in Texas to confront her demons and get some answers to questions she was too young to ask. 

When Ledge Burnett was a teen he had multiple run-ins with the law, the last of which he escaped by joining the army. Now he’s back in his hometown to care for his ailing uncle, and ghosts from his past are starting to reappear. When he gets a call from Arden out of the blue asking about his home renovation services, he’s positive it can’t be a coincidence and realizes she just might know more about that night twenty years ago than she’s letting on. He doesn’t account for her appearance stirring the suspicions of who he suspects is the real culprit. Or his growing attraction for Adren that can only lead to more complications. 

Review

Set in a small Texas town, Thick as Thieves is Sandra Brown’s latest romantic suspense. More thriller than romance, the main plotline that centered around the heist was tightly wound around both Ledge and Arden’s relationship as well as their backstories and characters. Thankfully, I like thrillers just as much as I like romance, so this story entertained from cover to cover. 

The opening prologue immediately captured my attention. Purposefully vague in detail, a brief recount of the heist from a third-party perspective provides just enough to set the foundation for the story but doesn’t reveal pivotal information that would give the book away. My initial assumptions were absolutely shattered as the end of the book neared, a sign of an excellent thriller. 

The level of suspense was maintained throughout the story, as the book was formatted to bounce between character perspectives, both the main characters, Ledge and Arden, as well as the culprit,  It provided a slow but steady source of information about the heist. While I appreciated that the romance and the thriller never felt like two dissociated sides of the same story, the romantic scenes, specifically from Ledge’s point of view, sometimes felt abrupt and out of place. I thought the story deserved a more relaxed romance. To spell it out, Ledge and Arden would be discussing the heist and suddenly he would get distracted by her ass and his thoughts would turn decisively indecent. These parts felt a bit forced to me. However, overall I liked their characters, the progression of their relationship, and the overarching mystery that tied their histories together.

Ledge was a bit too stereotypical for my taste – ex-military, carpenter, good with his hands, that sort of thing – but the fact that he was engrossed in a decade-old crime put an interesting spin on his character. He also wasn’t perfect, which I appreciated. He lied to Arden on multiple occasions, and while that’s never a positive, his lies weren’t so unjustified that I disliked his character for it.

Summary

Overall, this book was a solid 4-stars. If you enjoy thrillers, you will not be disappointed! Ledge and Arden’s relationship was more like the cherry on top rather than the main scoop of ice cream, but I didn’t mind this one bit as the story was suspenseful and filled with dynamic characters and slowly-revealed secrets. I definitely recommend picking up a copy!
